Days until SSMUN 22nd Edition 2025
Letter from the Secretary-General
Dear delegates, faculty advisors, and others,
It is with great delight that I welcome you all to the 22nd edition of San Silvestre MUN. The remarkable Secretariat and I have worked tirelessly all this year to ensure SSMUN 2025 comes to life. Thus, there are no words to explain how excited I am to see you all on September 6th and 7th. Since I was given the honour to be the Secretary General of MUN in San Silvestre, this edition of SSMUN has always felt like a dream, and it feels surreal to believe that it will come true in a few weeks.
The confines of the 2020 quarantine unexpectedly ushered Model United Nations into my world, initially as a simple antidote to boredom. As I attended my first online conferences, I did not get the ‘hype’ of MUN. What was the point of reading speeches out of my screen, and joining break-out rooms to not say a word? It was not until I attended this same conference three years ago, that I began to see MUN for what it really is. It was a double DISEC committee discussing the use of cryptocurrencies in organized crime and I represented the delegation of Yemen. As I relentlessly defended the urgent threat cryptocurrencies posed – highlighting their role in empowering the Iran-backed Houthi militants who controlled half of 'my' assigned nation - a profound realization struck me. I realized the importance of the topics discussed in MUN, and I felt for the first time the so-called adrenaline rush delegates feel when they are completely passionate about the topic they are discussing. From that moment forward, MUN transcended mere extracurricular activity. It became a vital avenue for staying informed on the world's most pressing and relevant challenges. It offered me a unique platform for self-challenge, demanding that I advocate fiercely for a nation not my own, pushing me to generate deep empathy. Moreover, it became an opportunity to hone my speaking abilities, improve my leadership skills, and sharpen my critical thinking, shaping me into the well-rounded individual I aspire to be one day.
For this conference, you can expect a dynamic platform where you'll have meaningful debates and work collaboratively to come up with innovative solutions for the world's most urgent global issues. Following the legacy that former secretary generals have built on past editions of SSMUN, I am confident this conference will be full of enthusiastic debate, intricate negotiation, strong advocacy, and friendly competition.
I can't explain how excited I am to see each of you grow as delegates and individuals throughout the 2 days. It will be amazing to witness how all the love and effort we've put into this conference translates into an amazing MUN experience for everyone. I encourage you all to pour your hearts out to passionately defend your stance, but remember to have fun above all else! I hope that this conference will be a crucial turning point in your personal path like all MUNs are for me. Never forget the responsibility you uphold while discussing these pressing matters. Even though it’s a “model” remember MUN is truly “Where Global Leaders are Made”!
See you there!
